1. Preliminary Treatment:
It is also called pretreatment which involves a physical mechanism to treat wastewater. It involves screening which uses bar screens to remove large solids like pieces of rags, fabric, yarn, lint, sticks; that may cause damage to the equipment of the Effluent Treatment Plant. Then the wastewater is moved to the next level.

2. Primary Treatment:
It involves physical and chemical mechanisms for the treatment of wastewater. When wastewater enters into the primary tank, it stays for a long time and as a result, the heavier particles settle to the bottom and lighter particles float to the surface. In this treatment, the settled and floatable materials are eliminated by using flocculation and coagulation process, then it is passed to secondary treatment.

3. Secondary Treatment:
Wastewater that enters into the secondary tank is free from physical particles. Most of the Effluent Treatment Plants use a biological treatment which involves an aerated lagoon, an activated sludge process, trickling filter and an oxidation pond for the removal of a Biochemical Oxygen Demand but activated sludge process is the most functional biological oxidation method employed for the treatment of wastewater. In this stage, around 80% of organic waste will be removed and then transferred to the tertiary treatment.

4. Tertiary Treatment:
It involves a physical, chemical and biological mechanism to remove residual suspended solids, dissolved solids and more that are not removed in the preceding treatment levels. Depending on the wastewater condition, several disinfection agents like chlorine, ozone, UV light are used. Wastewater after this treatment is finally fit for disposal or for further use.
